Minnesota Vikings: What Now, Adrian Peterson?

Another Vikings season comes to an end in disappointment, but by now they should be used to it.

Far from the sucker punch loss of 1998 and nowhere near the embarrassment of the 41-0 thrashing the Vikings suffered in 2001, this loss was just like most of the losses during the season. Despite ample chances, the Vikings simply couldn’t take hold of the game. The Eagles played well enough to win, and the Vikes simply didn’t. This isn’t to say they weren’t competitive, they certainly were, but a win would have been almost unjustified.

A lot of Jim Johnson’s planning went into stopping Adrian Peterson, and they were largely successful. Besides his 40 yard touchdown run, Peterson was held to just 43 yards on 18 carries, caught zero passes, and his first quarter injury limited his effectiveness in the blocking game.

However, Peterson did have that 40 yarder, and another touchdown besides it. He was sure-handed, and forced the Eagles to account for his positioning on every play. Had Tavaris Jackson been more accurate, or the Vikings been able to convert their third-and-shorts, the game would have taken a very different tone, especially the second half.

So, whether Adrian Peterson did all he could do to help the Vikings or not may be a matter of opinion, but what isn’t up for debate is that he had a positive impact for the Vikings. Chester Taylor is a great back, but he lacks the breakaway burst that makes defenses game plan around Peterson.

Peterson clearly doesn’t need to completely reinvent himself or add a whole new dimension to his game, but if he doesn’t improve, the rest of the league will catch up to him.

Neither of the NFC’s superstar backs, Michael Turner nor Adrian Peterson, could carry their team past the first round of the playoffs, and both were held in check by softer defenses, so what does that say?

Likely, it’s a sign that as long as Peterson continues to improve, he’ll remain a feature back for a long time, since he wasn’t the only star to struggle.

Solving his late season fumbling issues and improving his pass catching out of the backfield should be high on his offseason to-do list, but Adrian Peterson can surely ignore the many voices this offseason that will scream and shout that he should remake his skills to better fit the mold of other successful backs in the league.

Australia says no again to Gitmo detainees

January 3rd, 2009 by anthonywilliamshomepage

(CNN) — Australia declined a request from the Bush administration to resettle detainees held by the United States at Guantanamo Bay, the Australian Associated Press agency (AAP) reported Saturday.

President-elect Barack Obama has pledged to close Guantanamo Bay but hasn't set a specific timetable.

President-elect Barack Obama has pledged to close Guantanamo Bay but hasn’t set a specific timetable.

Australia’s acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard said each detainee was considered on a "case-by-case basis" and decided that none met her country’s "stringent national security and immigration criteria," AAP reported.

Australia turned down a similar request from the Bush administration in early 2008 to resettle a small group of detainees. Washington approached Canberra again in early December.

"We will consider any future requests on a case-by-case basis against these stringent criteria for both national security and immigration," said Gillard, who is acting prime minister while Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is on vacation.

Australia is among several countries that have spoken about the issue in recent weeks as a new U.S. administration prepares to take over. Those countries all say they support closing the controversial prison camp, with hopes that President-elect Barack Obama will soon shut it down.

But so far, only Portugal has said it is willing to take in freed prisoners.

"The time has come for the European Union to step forward," Luise Amado, Portugal’s minister of state and foreign affairs, said in December. "As a matter of principle and coherence, we should send a clear signal of our willingness to help the U.S. government in that regard, namely through the resettlement of detainees."

Don’t Miss

Amado urged fellow EU member nations to accept inmates not considered security risks as a way to help close Guantanamo.

The U.S. State Department told CNN it has been in touch with "dozens" of countries for years about resettling detainees eligible for transfer or release. It renewed those requests to a number of countries in recent months as part of ongoing efforts, said Gordon Duguid, deputy press secretary at the State Department.

The German government acknowledged the difficult issues facing freed prisoners who neither want to remain in the United States nor are able to return to their home countries for safety reasons. It pledged in November to hold "intensive talks" with the Obama administration on taking in detainees but made no promises — and, like Portugal, it urged common EU action.

"As the first step, it is necessary that the new U.S. administration clarifies the circumstances of closure of Guantanamo and the legality for dealing with then-former detainees," the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "The German government sees no need to take immediate action, but we’re examining the matter. We need to consider all legal aspects, plus the issues to be discussed amongst EU nations."

Tiffany evans

The question of resettling freed prisoners is a thorny one in any discussions about closing down the Guantanamo facility, opened at a U.S. naval base in Cuba in 2002 to house prisoners from Afghanistan.

Offers from other nations to take in suspects would go a long way toward resolving the issue, said Tomas Valasek, director of foreign policy and defense at the London-based Center for European Reform.

Cuba marks 50 years of revolution

January 2nd, 2009 by anthonywilliamshomepage

Cuba has marked the 50th anniversary of the revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power, creating a communist state on the United States’ doorstep.

President Raul Castro, who took over from Fidel last year, spoke from below the same balcony where his brother declared victory on 1 January 1959.

He predicted the revolution would survive another 50 years.

The festivities have been muted as Cuba struggles with big economic challenges and the aftermath of three hurricanes.

Reacting to the anniversary, a White House spokesman said the US continued to seek freedom for the Cuban people.

Series of concerts

Addressing the nation from the south-eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, Raul Castro said the next 50 years “will also be of permanent struggle”.

“With the firm promise that in this land we can always exclaim with pride that glory to our heroes and martyrs. Long live Fidel, long live the revolution, long live free Cuba!” said President Castro.

He was speaking from the very place where his elder brother proclaimed victory after the US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista had fled the country 40 years ago.

He spoke proudly of the 1959 revolution that transformed the Caribbean island into a communist state 145 km (90 miles) from US shores, but warned the country should remain vigilant.

Ghana vote despite party boycott

“The enemy will never cease to be aggressive, treacherous and dominant,” he said.

“It is time to reflect on the future, on the next 50 years when we shall continue to struggle incessantly.

“I’m not trying to scare anyone, this is the truth,” he added.

A series of free concerts had been planned across the island, but the authorities said it was not the time for lavish celebrations after the nation suffered one of the most difficult financial years since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Towering presence

The frail health of Fidel Castro has also dampened the mood of anniversary celebrations, says the BBC’s Michael Voss in Havana.

The 82-year-old has not been seen in public since undergoing major surgery almost 18 months ago. There was no pre-recorded message on state television on New Year’s Eve nor one of his regular newspaper editorials to mark the event.

Nonetheless, he remains a towering presence in Cuba, even in the background.

Raul Castro has introduced some limited reforms since he has been in charge, but many Cubans believe that as long as Fidel is alive, no meaningful political or economic change will happen, correspondents say.

Fifty years on, the legacy of the revolution is complex. There is free education and health care but the state-controlled economy means w

Barack Obama: The new ‘decider’

by Mark Silva

As he heads to Washington this weekend, President-elect Barack Obama already has built an image as a strong and decisive leader - winning the highest marks on this score since Ronald Reagan.

Obama after workout.jpg

Seventy-six percent of Americans surveyed by CNN/Opinion Research Corp. call Obama a strong and decisive leader.

“That’s the best number an incoming president has gotten on that dimension since Ronald Reagan took office in 1981,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland says.. “The public’s rating of his leadership skills is already as high as George W. Bush’s was after 9/11 and easily beats the numbers that both Bush and Bill Clinton got at the start of their first terms in office.”

Eight in ten Americans say Obama ” inspires confidence, can get things done and is tough enough to be president, three characteristics Americans look for in a leader and the three qualities on which Obama got his highest scores,” CNN reports.

“It is Obama’s ability to inspire confidence and the perception that he is tough enough for the job that may be most important for him as the country faces fresh challenges abroad and a historically harsh economic downturn,” Holland says.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey of 1,013 adults was conducted December 19-21, and carries a possible margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released December 26 showed that 75 percent of those surveyed were happy to see President Bush leave office.

Obama, finishing a family vacation in Hawaii, plans to move to Washington this wekeend, settling into the Hay-Adams Hotel a block from the White House, so that his two young daughters — second and fifth-graders — can start school at Sidwell Friends. The Obamas will move to Blair House on Jan. 15, and into the White House on Jan. 20.
